What a strange boy, you thought to yourself.
There was a boy with a denim jacket and sweats sitting in the sand box. He looked about your age with his puffy cheeks and large round eyes. He sat comfortably with a stick in hand, mumbling to himself.
You approached with caution and realized he was actually singing, a song he most likely made up on the spot.
‘I was here yesterday.
I am here again today.
I’ll be back tomorrow.
And the days after that.
I’ll be waiting by the sandbox like you told me to.
I’ll be waiting every day, every day for you.’
"Boy…" you spoke.
The little boy stopped humming and turned his head in your direction, “Are you talking to me?” He pointed the stick to himself.
You giggled, “Yes you. What are you doing here by yourself?” You crouched beside him, drawing shapeless figures in the sand with your small pointer finger.
"I’m waiting for my mother," the little boy replied.
"It’s getting late, where did she go?" you asked.
The little boy looked up at you with sad eyes, “I don’t know.”
—14 years later—
"KYUNGSOO!" you yelled from across the hall.
"Move it. Excuse me. Get out of my way. Thanks." You <charged> made your way through the crowd of people.
Why do people need to make conversation smack in the middle of the damn hall! you puffed in anger.
"Kyungsoo!" you called out.
Kyungsoo turned around hearing that oh so familiar voice he loved to hear. “Hey!” he waved back, waiting for you to catch up with him.
"What took you so long?" he asked while slinging your bag over his shoulder.
"Sorry, the stupid Bio professor made us watch a boring-ass video and I couldn’t leave ‘cause he said there might be questions on the exam from this." You walked side-by-side, footsteps in sync with each other.
"Wow that sucks. My Astronomy class was brutal too," he laughed.
"I thought that you don’t even pay attention in that class?" you arched your brow at him.
Kyungsoo grinned goofily, “I don’t. I fell asleep within 5 minutes of the lecture.”
You punched his shoulder lightly, “Kyungsoo, why do you even bother going to that class when all you do is sleep anyways?”
Kyungsoo’s grin faded quickly as he tried to pull of a satisfactory smile, “You know why…”
You wanted to shoot yourself in the face, dammit! Why can’t I censor my mouth with these type of things!
When you first met Kyungsoo, you were 6 years old. He was that little boy you saw every time you went to the park with your family and friends.
His mother abandoned him at the age of 4, since then he was under the care of his uncle and aunt— his only known family.
No one knows why Kyungsoo’s mother left. Police stopped searching once they brought Kyungsoo to his uncle’s. The case went cold leaving a lonely boy with broken words, “I’ll be back”.
You became good friends with Kyungsoo. He wasn’t the brightest kid, but he was very talented and humble. Growing up you made many friends and enemies, but Kyungsoo was always there for you.
Both of you never fought. Your mother said you both complimented each other.
Kyungsoo was patient while you were a bit tempered. Kyungsoo was giving, while you were selfish and stubborn. You were more adventurous, while he liked to play it safe.
"So where do you wanna eat for lunch?" Kyungsoo asked.
"I’m craving fried chicken… Bubble tea… Fries… Noodles…" Your mouth salivated as you imagined all the food you wanted to eat at that instant.
"Whoa. Calm down. For a girl you eat like a…" Kyungsoo paused.
You eyed him intently waiting for him to continue his sentence. Kyungsoo gulped in fear, “Never mind.”
I thought so, you smirked.
“Alright, I’ll treat you to chicken and bubble tea since you got me coffee last week,” Kyungsoo held the door open to the fast food restaurant.
“Yay!” you gleamed in reply, happily walking in. Kyungsoo laughed at your silly expression.
“Okay sit and I’ll order at the counter, otherwise you’ll order everything!” Kyungsoo stated.
“Aigoo” you sighed, “Alright. Palli, I’m starving!”
You sat patiently waiting for Kyungsoo, looking through the pictures on your phone. You see Kyungsoo probably twice or three times in a week, but you constantly message each other daily.
You worried about Kyungsoo. He didn’t have many friends like you, but no one knew his real story. It was a hard secret to tell, but you gave your word to Kyungsoo.
He was a bit pale today. Something must have happened at home…
His eyes were slightly puffy, but you didn’t want to say anything. I wonder what’s going on? you questioned as you watched him order your meals.
He seemed thinner too. Is he eating properly?
You were protective of Kyungsoo, and for good reason too.
“Here you go!” Kyungsoo announced, breaking you from your thoughts. “Wah! Kamsahamnida Kyungsoo!” you bowed respectfully.
Kyungsoo laughed at your polite matter, as you quickly <attacked> began to eat your fill.
“Kyungsoo, you didn’t have to walk me all the way home you know?” you stood in front of your door.
“It’s alright, I need to kill time anyways…” Kyungsoo smiled brightly. “Well, I’ll see you tomorrow hopefully. I finish at noon, how about you?”
“Yeah, I only have biology and English. I’ll be done by 11 o’clock, see ya!” you replied waving him bye.
You entered your house, debating if you should slack or read a chapter in your text.
I still got like 4 days, I’ll read it tomorrow.
